Learning from the experts : Photoshop CS3

On Monday 26th May, i was invited by Anne from PPM Technology & Communications to the Photoshop CS3 2-hour workshop at Teras One Solution, Bangsar. I’m no photoshop experts. i just use what i know but I’m very happy to learn something absolutely new that i don’t try it before.

The instructor is Stephanie Wong, a Certified Expert and Instructor at Teras One Solution.  Among the invitees are Mixter from Mixter Studio and Brandon form IT-Sideways. the topics that she teach is Quick Selection, Smart Filters, Vanishing Point 2 and merging photos. I never knew there was a Vanishing Point 1 perhaps and that merging photos is not a typical merge. it’s very useful.

Quick Selection tool is a tool like the Magic Wand, just that it’s more clever, you just have to drag it. Well i think most of us know what is Magic Wand for. Quick Selection is for us to select the part of images. Oh another shortcut key that I’ve learnt, is the use of ‘ [ ‘ and ‘ ] ‘ to increase the brush size. Every pixel that you touch with Quick Selection tool, it will be selected.

Next is Smart Objects & Smart Filter. This is totally something new for me. If Stephanie didn’t teach this, im very sure im still using the old traditional method, do-see the results-not satisfied and do it again-thingy. So first is Smart Objects. It was introduced in Photoshop CS2. Smart Objects preserve an image’s source content with all its original characteristics, enabling you to perform nondescontructive editing to the layer. Cut it short, it’s like the Movie Clip in Flash. here’s the tutorial for you at Photoshop Support.

As for smart filter, remember the days what we have to apply the filter, undo-it and then, re-apply the filter to suit our configurations? With Smart Filters, no need to go through complex process again. if it doesn’t suit your needs and you need some tweak, you just need to click at Smart Filter layer at Layer Panel. View the tutorial here at Photoshop Essentials.

Next is vanishing Point. All the time before this, I have to press ctrl or alt to control the ending points of the picture and to make it follow the perspective. vanishing points make it a lot easier. you define the 4 points of the plane/perspective area and then, tweak the point till it suits you. Again I was amazed. there was so many things i missing in using photoshop. I’m not an avid learner to seek for tutorials but I’ve just found this Vanishing Point tutorials for you to play with.

And lastly, Stephanie teach us how to merge photos. this is not a simple merge. This totally blown me away. With auto align layer, you just need to import your chosen picture, select the layers and then, click Edit>auto-align layers. After that, start masking it. Youtube demo here. In the same category, is a Photomerge tool. Now amateur photographers can say bye-bye to wide lenses. with your shaky hands, you still able to do great panoramic pictures of the places. here ’s the tutorial for your at Photoshop Support.

Well that’s the new stuff i found out and at least i’m very lucky before CS4 will be published. Please make use of things that i share here. Practice makes perfect :)

Ride The Wave - Adobe Education Leadership Forum, Malaysia

On 17th April 2008, I was invited as a Media from Anne K Ewe from PPM Technology Communications to Adobe Education Leadership Forum at Hotel Nikko. It was a two day event organized by Adobe to all educators, instructors from various college and education institution. But i’m not present on the first day. so can’t tell much on what happened on the first day.

ridethewave.jpg

So on the second day, the first speaker for Higher Education Track is Megan Stewart, the Director of Higher Education, Adobe Systems. She explained about how things change lately especially in the digital media world. Her talk entitled “Engagement, Collaboration & innovation in Higher Education”
First, she redefine the experience engaging that it is must be

  1. accessible
  2. collaborative
  3. compelling
  4. easy to use
  5. personalized
  6. responsive.

Next, she come up with new buzzwords, University ( UNIV ) 2.0. haha just like Web 2.0 but different matter. UNIV 2.0 is a collaboration between countries or institution with better connection and will train the students to be prepared for the industry with the skillsets required.  ( this is as far as i know and understand )

After that, i have so much of fun knowing what our neighbors been up to, Singapore. The speakers, Melvin Goh & Patricia Lim from Adobe Education Innovators talks about “Making Waves in Higher Education with Interactive Media”. This time, the picture tell more than the words they’re saying. manage to know about skin technologies, ambilight, tiltsensors, arduino… oho..

image1312.jpgThen i’m attending Media Briefing : The APAC ( Asia-Pacific ) Landscape, a talk given by John Treloar, Education Director, Asia Pacific, Adobe Systems. Adobe choose Singapore as their Asean hub because they’re more well-equipped in terms of infrastructure and equipment. They even have competition among school and polytechnic.  He also stated Adobe’s responsible in Education world is to supply the curriculum.. and

“Is not tool that you have to learn. But the ability to publish sheer content.”

So tool… is not as important as the content itself. Content is the king.  Adobe have all the tools.. now it’s up to the student to publish sheer extraordinary content. “Take as much as you want”

One thing i’m almost.. touched :P .. is when John Treloar exhibit one animation that was produced by kid less than 12 years old. the animation is pretty simple, just a stick animation but John said

“Imagine the learning process this kid have gone through to made this animation..”

I was.. whoa… this kid has already know keyframing, masking, tween shape, and all those yada yada.. pretty amazing.

Overall, i think the forum is very beneficial especially to educators. I’ve met Candice,my Digital Media classmate, now is a lecturer at The One Academy,  at the forum. She said that this is really a breathtaking experience and shall not be missed to any of the educators.

And as for me, i’ve gain more confidence, experience, passion, and spirit in teaching what i know ( that is Flash of course :)
